(Received January 16, 10 a.m.) Pacific Cable Conference. Sydney, January 16 Postmaster-General Cook is highly satisfied with the report of the Pacific Cable Conference. He thinks it will result in the matter being gone on with at once, and is much gratified that the j Conference adopted nearly all the re-! commendations of the Australian coJoniei. Terrible dale.

The barque St Mary's Bay, from Sharpnesi, experienced a terrible gale off Tasmania. Five men were washed overboard and two drowned. The chief officer's leg was broken.

An influential deputation from the Presbyterian Assembly drew the attention of the Premier to the influence the French were gaining in the New Hebrides, and the action of French traders in carrying on business in firearms and liquor. They urged that the natter be considered at the meeting of the Federal Council. Mr Turner promised to bring the matter under notice of the Oouncil.

Yorke, charged with forging the names of certain sbarebrokers to mining telegrams, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months on each charge. The more serious charges were not proceeded with.
