The city newspapers almost nnaui« tnously approve the nomination of Chief Justice Way, of South Australia, to a seat on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

111,8, Torch.

H.M, sloop Torch relieves the Ringdove on the Australian station. The Torch was built in 1894 and carries six twenty-five pounders, four three pounders, asd two machine gum. She has a displacement of 960 tons, and steams thirteen knots.

Pigmies.

Calcutta, January 14.

A party of Danish officers, exploring the Pamir plateau, have discovered a tribe of pigmies, devotees of the gun. The cattle and other animals of these strange people are also of a diminutive character.

The Plague.

The bubonic plague has now reached Poonah in the Bombay district. Arrested for Murder, Tokio, January 14 Miss Jacobs has been arrested on the charge of murdering Mr Carew at Yokohama, The prisoner deniei having oonfessed the crime.
