. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton School Committee was held Jasfc evening. Present — Messrs D. Macpherson (chairman), J. R. Chaptnaa, W. Ciaighead, Meddins, W. J. Silcock, ELM./ Jones, Mac Lean Dunn, J. Keir, and J. Phaup. FINANCE. The Chairman reported the bank credit to be £8 8s sd. EDUCATION ACT, BTC. The Board forwarded four copiea of the Education Act, for the use of the Committee. The Board also forwarded Borne ink wells, and a couple of forms with backs. It also sent authority to hwe the ceiling of the master's house rep-ired. SANITARY CONDITION OF THE SCHOOL. The Board wrote to the effect that the matter of the sanitary condition of the school would be considered at once, as the Inspector of Works, who was conversant with the subject had now returned.— lt was decided to ask' the Board to have the desired improvement-) effected. during the holidays. SCHOOL CONCERT. The master reported that the receipts from the school concert ha J been £15 18s 6d« which had been placed to the credit of the prizi fund m the bank. The Chairman stated that the net amount on hand for prizes was £10 7s 3d, and he had received from several ladies and gentlemen promises of special prizes. The Chairman, Mr* Keir, and Mr Silcook were appointed a Committee to procure prizes, and with the teachers apportion the prizes to the several classes, the " breaking up " to take place on December 23, and the Chairman to distribute the prizes. master's report. The master reported the attendance for the month; to. have, been — On roll, 498; highest attendance^ 454 ; Btriob average, 440. The attendance had been fairly satisfactory. RESIGNATION* Miss Orr teudered her resignation as assistant mistress. Misß Orr said she desired to withdraw from the teaching profession, and gave two months' notice. The resignation was accepted, and the Committee expressed themselves m congratulatory language on Miss Orr's approach' ing marriage, and tendered a hearty vote of thanks to her for pas: services. The Committee decided to xecommend Miss Hannah Curd, second mistress, to the position to be vacated by Miss Orr. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. It was decided to give five weeks holidays from December 23. • - VISITINO COMMITTEE. The Visiting Committee reported the erection of a new pump, the execution of some small repairs. Messrs Keir and Mac* Lean Dunn were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month. ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the Committee adjourned.
