MITCHELL & TURNER. TANCRED SIREET The Portable Swing Water Barrow. Prevention -ie Better Than Cure f|>HE few cases of Typhoid m Ashburton Borough and Suburbs afford no i. ground for a " scare," but it is only by usiDg reasonable precautions that the dread scourge can be kept within bounds. In view of the subject being referred to m the public journals, it may be of service f o reprint tin extract from an issue of the " Nineteenth Century " of loßt year, m which special reference is made to Diphtheria, but which applies with equal force to Typhoid. The writer remarks, that the latest epidemics m Bussia swept away nearly all the children m pome villages ; and m Prussia, no less than one-sixth to one-fourth part of all children dying m the age of from one to five jears succumbed to Diphtheria, and the same proportion prevailed m Western Europe as well. Keen interest is being tttken m the experiments of the French Doctors, Roux and Tersen ; but Diphtheria, like Anthrax, Cholera, Typhoid, Malaria, and other kindred complaints is due to an infection of the body by epecial bacteria, caused by the effluvia rieing from drains, back yards and premises generally, into and upon whioh dairy and kitchen slops have been thrown. Without an infection by bacteria or the poisons which they secrete, there is no diphtheria. The Portable Wash Barrow is just the one thing indispensable m the direction of perfect sanitary arrangements. By its use, a two-fold bonefit is derived. The fever and diphtheria breeding agencies are removed, end what is otherwise a source of terror becomes sn absolute gain, by conveying the wash to pig trough or to the garden. " The Portable Barrows can be put to varions kinds of use, and they are so admirably constructed that, with them, a child carx do work which otherwise requires the strength of mature years. The cost is comparatively small. Possession ot one becomes an absolute means of sweetness, comfort and profit. Improyed Copper Boilers. 1 have just received direct from the manufactures a fresh supply of Portable Ccpper Boilers, with patent smoke stsck joint, and Semi-double sheeted frame— galvanised. This useful household requisite should bo inspected, when its various excellencies of construction, strength and serviceableness, will speak for themselves.
