THE FORTHCOMING ELECTION.
,-,TO THE EDITOR,
Sib, — Mr McLachian is surely, gnilty^ of the basest sort of ingratitude m complaining of what is " going on m Ashburton," seeing that Mr Purnell, who won the seat for him last election, is again going the right way to 'secure it for. bim this time. Of oourse lfc is nothing to, Mr Parnell that he should weaken Mr Wright m the R»ngitat» bo long as he can get even with Mr Wason for offering hid 1 services to the constituency at the last election, and possibly taking aWay a score of Votes which might have otherwise I been .cast 'for himself. Mr Wright's reply to the requisition ' makes it absolutely certain that he had no hand m the matter ; andatanyrate he will see on perusing the requisition that signatures of the leading business men of Ashburton are conspicuous by their absence. Ihe worst feature m the case is the use that has been made of Mr Rolleston'fl name. On the very best authority J Have it that neither directly aor indirectly has Mr Bolleitoh ever signified 'his intention eft- Standing for the Rangitata, and those gentlemen who signed the requisition on the ground that it was arranged that he should do so, or that Mr Wason was not standing for Ashburton, will, I have no doubt, lay the blame on the proper shoulders -~I am, etc., Elector.,
