Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. SATURDAY, MAY 4, 1895.
Mr Henry Zander, who has taken considerable pains and spent a good deal of time in an effort to a telephone for have a telephone exashburton. change established in
Ashburton, has just received from the Secretary to the Postal Departments letter which Ashburton people will read with interest. At first the department would only consent to establish an exchange after sixty subscribers had been guaranteed. This waa afterwards reduced to fifty, provided the subscribers guaranteed to remain on the exchar.ge for five years. It ia difficult to procure fifty people in Ashburton to guarantee five years' subscription to any project, no matter how useful, but a guarantee for two yeara is not so very formidable a matter. The letter runs thus:—Wellington, May 2, 1895. Sir,~l have the honor, by direction, to refer to your letter of the 23rd ultimo, to the Hon. Mr Seddon, iv connection with the proposed telephone exchange at Ashburton, and, in reply, to inform you that a telephone exchange will now be established at Ashburton on fifty persons agreeing to become paying subscribers for a period of two years only.— I have, etc., W. Gray, Secretary.— The telephone in Aahburton is thus within ea^y distance of becoming a fact, <u»d Mr Senior deserves tha thanks of the business eomj^anitf for bis energy and perseverance in the matte*.
