GOOD WORK
WAIMATE RIFLES.
The Waimate Rifle corps fired on Thursday—beginning at 5.30 a.m. - for the Government prizes for volley and independent firing, and the company made a "figure of merit " which is not likely to be beaten in the colony. The firing took place under Colonel Bailey and Staff-Sergeant-Major Jones, Lieutenants Grant and Coltman being in command. The men fired in three squads with the following results :-Volley firingNo. 1-18 men, 292 points, average 1622; No. 2-47 men, 310 points, average 18 23; No, 3-6 men, 106 points, average 1/-66, Independent firing:—No. 1-248 points, 13-72; No. 2—316 points, average 18-58; Ho. 3-110 points, average 18-33. " Com. p&ny'B Figure ot Merit" for volley firing 16-04. The figure ot merit for volley firing, 16.85; company's average for independent firing.itmay be explained, depends upon good shooting and good attendance together, as the number of points made is divided, not by the number of men who fire, but by the number of men in the company eligible to lire. The Waimate corps has 42 eligible and 41 of them turned up. It is thought, without looking up records, that so high a figure of merit aa 16 85 has never before been gained by any company. Th 3 highest in the colony in the 1893 competitions was that of the Wanganui Rifles 1305, and in 1892 that of the Christehurch Rifles 14-20. The Waimate Rifles by their good shooting and good attendance on Thursday have again won she prize for the South Canterbury corps. The *' company's average 'for independent firing is also iound by dividing the score by the number of men eligible to shoot.
