Sydney, October 13. On the introduction of the Local Option. Bill an amendment to the effect that the bill should provide for compensation was carried by 47 to 23.
STRIKE.
Owingtotherefusalofthemanagement to reinstate a dismissed employee the West Wallsend Engineers struck work, thus laying the mine idle.
POLITICAL.
In the Legislative Assembly, Sir Henry Parkes has given notice of motion to the effect that the existence of a nominated Upper House^ is an insuperable obstacle to the federation of the colonies, and should be abolished or re-established on a popular basis.
THE BANKING FRAUDS.
The evidence for the prosecution m the charge against the directors of the Australian Banking Company for conspiring together to issue a fraudulent balance sheet has finished. Several «f the defendants addressed the Court, and blamed Malcolm for enticing them into the concern.
