Ashburton Market.

MR D. THOMAS. Mr D. Thomas reports upon the live stock market in the Ashburton district for the week ending lOfch inst., as follows, viz:—On Tuesday at the Ashburton Yards the usual weekly sale of live stcck was held. There was a small attendance of fanners and others interested, and although there were buyers about, still biddings came slowly, and it was with the utmost difficulty that the various salesmen were able to clear their catalogues at values equal to those ruling a few weeks ago. Except in hoggets, no decline in values was apparent, and even in these the drop was not very great, say 6d per liead from July rates, Thoy will be dearer before they are cheaper, unless we have another very dry year. The catalogues for the day were not large, and as a general thins: the quality of the stock was not very first-class. The totals for the day consisted, of 3903 sheep and 15 head of cattle, of which my entry consisted of 1Q47 sheep and II head of cattle, every one of which changed hapds at the following prices, viz :— crossbred lambs and 18 lambs at 13s each ; 278 merino ewes, in low condition, 7s ; 21 merino hoggets, 6s; 95 crossbred hoggets, 11s 9J ;93 crossbred hoggets, 12s ; 660 merino ewes in lamb, 7s 7d and 7s 8d ; 400 crossr bred hoggets, 10s lid ; 70 cull merino ewes, «s Bd, &o. Jn cattle I sold one at £5, lQs ; one cow at £3 15s 5 one do, £8, 7s 6cl; six head at £Q 15.3, and twe at £f lQs. These were very prime light weights from South. Duruig the week I have made several private sales of sheep and one of fat cattle.
