THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
The Minister without Portfolio, the Hon. ,Mr Ward, has soon been furnished witfy a subject calling for his active attention as Minister m charge of the Postal Department. M r Ward was one of the most adverse critics of the San Francisco mail service as it has been until recently carried out, and only tne recent changes m the contract have modified his opinions. The inefficient coastal conveyance of the maiis was a point on which he laid much stress, and no worse instance of the delays which the mails are frequently subject to on the way south from Auckland than that which occurs to-day could well take place. Tlie mail arrived at Wellington last evening, and instead of being at once forwarded so as to reach Lyttelton, it is delayed m Wellington until this afternoon. Such mismanagement cannot escape the notice of a business man, and Mr Ward may be depended upon to ascertain the reason why, and to take steps which will prevent such an occurrence m future.
