Industrial Art in France.

(FROM OUR PARIS CORRESPONDENT.)

Owing to the success of the industrial art sections at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, a movement is m progress to organise similar sections, on a very select scale, at the annual salons. It is pointed out that industrial art is more than ever claiming the earnest attention of the Ministry of Public Instruction and other authorities, that leamnd publications on the subject are becoming more numerous and elaborate every year, and that recently one of these works received a very high award from the institute itself. Moreover, the existing classification of the various arts is purely modern. The masterpieces of the Venetian Saxsovius consisted of ordinary articles, such as locks and keys, and his genius was also shown m the ornamentation of the curb of a well or of the pedestal of a flag-staff. Raffael and Michael Angelo decorated apartments, and the panels of a State carriage at the Austrian Courc were painted by^ Rubens. It has been asked, m fine, why, if useful subjects are already admitted, the ornamentation of furniture and other articles should be excluded from the salon.
