The first of a series of dances will be given this evening m the Oddfellows' Hall, under tbe management of the lessee. Every comfort), and convenience haß been provided, and no expense spared to make the dance a aucoess. Mr E. J, Paul was, at a meeting of the Ashburton Guards held last night, unanimously eleoted Lieutenant of the Company m place of Lieutenant J. Cockburn, resigned. BFrom present appearances our local lover of piscatorial sports are promised "a good time " this coming season, and they can at once begin to make ready for the fishing by investing m a license from the Local Sooi'ety, tiits they oan obtain from Mr W. Zander, East street, and from an inspection of his large and varied stock of fishing rods and tnaterials of all kinds for the Bport no one need go away from tbe town for their supply „ of taokle this season.

A Government Inspeotion Parade ot tba Ashburton Volunteers was held last evening. I Colonel Bailey inspecting. The Bifles (Capt. j Dolman) mustered 54, Guards (Capt. Sparrow) ' 38, the Cadets, under Sergeant-Major Hayes, mustered about 45. Major Douglas and Capt* Fooks were also present. The Rifles and Guards were marched out and exercised m battalion drill by Major Douglas, after whioh they were marched back to the shed. Colonel Bailey expressed himself pleased with the muster, and said he hoped to get all the corps together for a good class drill on Nov. 9th. The Cadets were drilled by Sergeant-Major Hayes m the presence of Colonel Bailey, who expressed himself well pleased with the lads' behaviour, and hoped they would be able to hold their own with tho remainder of the Cadet corps m the district when they met on Nov. 9th. By that date we understand the I uniforms for the Cadets will have arrived. At a meeting of the Ashburton A. and P. Association, held on Tuesday afternoon, Judges and Marshals for the forthcoming show wero appointed. In'imation of their appointment will be forwarded to theße gentlemen as soon as possible. A publio meeting is to be held at Methven on Monday next to consider the existing railway arrangements. These have been found to prove Tery inconvenient. If a resident of I Methven desires to visit Ashburton he has to leave about seven m the morning and ha cannot arrive home till about eight at night. From complaints which have reaohed us we should say that the railway authorities would find it to their own interest to make a change, »B at present people will not make use of the railway when they oan get other means of conveyance. Mr W. Zander has obtained permission to dispose of the Jubilee Picture, noticed by ns m a recent issue, by Art Union. We have been requested to draw the attention of intending exhibitors to the faot that the time for receiving entries for the Horse Parade, to beheld on Saturday next under the auspices of the Ashburton A. and P, Associa- , tion, has been extended till Thursday afternoon. At a meeting of the Committee of the Association, held on Tuesday afternoon, Messrs M. Stitt, O. Digby, J.Hunt aud 11. Miller were appointed a Committee Of Management for the Parade. The Parade this year promises to be a very good one, as the Seoretary at noon to-day had received seventeen entries. A meeting of directors of the Ashburton Caledonian Society was held m the Secretary's (Mr J. C. Duncan's) office on Tuesday evening. Present ; Messrs Eneon (m the chair), Reid, Brown, McKenzie, Patterson, Sim, . Anderson, J. Sealey and the Secretary. It was resolved that the annual concert and ball be held on Friday, Ootober 28 (show night) m the Oddfellows' Hall. It was re solved that the matter of engaging the Hall, and seeing to printing and advertising, be left m the hands of the Seoretary and Treasurer. The following Programme Committee was ap- ' pointed : — Messrs Dunn, Beid, Brown, MoKenzie, Paul, Anderson and Mcßae. It was resolved that the charges for ooncert and ball i Le th_ same as last year, viz :— concert — 3s, 2s and Is ; and ball— gentlemen 3s, and ladies free. A speoial vote of thanks was paßsed to the President for his kindness m giving an additional Ingleside. A special vote of thanks was also passed to the Ingleside Committee for the efficient way m which they bad managed those gatherings. The Secretary was instructed to call the atten'ion of the Ashburton Racing Club Committee to their intention of holding a meeting on Boxing Day, thus clashing with the Society's sports which have been held on tbat day for the laat eight years. Accounts were paßsed for payment, routine business waa transacted, and the meeting adjourned. The New South Wales Minister for Work has approved of a proposal to charge 20 per oent. higher rates for agricultural produce carried from tho seaboard inland than aro charged on produce conveyed from the inland towns to the coast. A clergyman at Camden, N.J , tells a good story. A few days ago a stylish couple called at his house and were married by him. On retiring the groom handed the minister a large offioial envelope, marked " A present, with thanks." Upon opening the same the munificent sum of 10 cents was found enclosed, At a funeral many friends had been invited, sb is the custom, but a neighbor woman who j had quarrelled with the family was not m. eluded. She watched the funeral pass her door, and said, " Weel, there'll be a funeral maybe at oor house some day, and we'll see wha'll be asked then 1 " j In 1865 the total number of patent medicine labels issued by the British Excise authorities was 7,074,668, and the receipts £55,333. Ten years later the number of labels had increased to 14,824,173, and the receipts to £114,323, while last year tho number of labels was yet higher at 21,468,718. The label duty, whioh is equivalent to one-eighth of the value of the article Btamped, has risen from £497,997 to £1,611,639 m twenty-one years. A circumstance without precedent since the dark days of 1870-71 has just occurred m Paris. On the evening of July 19 there was j only one theatre open for performance m that city— namely, the Menus-Plaisirs. Many of the others were closed m order to undergo the alterations whioh have been insisted upon by the Government since the awful disaster at the Opera Gomique ; and these diminish the number of seats m some instances so materially that the managers deolare that they will no longer be able to Oonduot them with profit. A rumor having gone forth that tbe Queen would give six guineas and a silver oradle to every infant born on her Jubilee day, within a week no fewer than 400 applications were made for the gratuity. Tha rumor which bad raised so many hopes had to be officially contradicted. It is istimated that there are about 1000 babies born every day m England. The following four leading principles have guided the South Australian Government (says the Treasurer) m the extensive alterations proposed m the Customs tariff:— (l) The encouragement of products and manufactures by increased duties on imported produots and manufactures ; (2) the admission of raw materials free ; (8) the admission of certain neoesßaries of life free (a " free breakfast table ") ; (4) tha taxation of luxuries. The Treasurer expects that the oolony will gain £60,000 by the alteration. Don't use stimulants, but nature'sbrain and nerve food— Hop Bitters. Bewae of all exoept made by Ameroain Co. See Holloway's Pills and Ointment.— The attention of all sufferers is drawn to these well-known remedies, for the possess conspicuous advantages as a safe and reliable aid m all those emergencies to which travellers, emigrants and sailors are so especially liable. They have been largely patronized by wayfarers by land and sea, and m faot, by all classes of the community, to their very great aavantage. The Pills are beyond all doubt one of the most effective remedies ever discovered for oases of obstinate constipation, confirmed indigestion and colic, complaints whioh are engendered by exposure and irregular feeding The Ointmett will be found of the greatest servioe m case o i piles, abscosses, erysipelas, and all kinds of ilooal ulcerations,
