VILLAGE SETTLEMENTS
The following letter, referring to a party of small Bottlers who, on Mr O'Callaghan's recommendation, took up land on the Hokianga settlement, has been received by that gentleman: — "Dear Sir, —l am instructed to convey you the hearty thanks of the Clirintchurch Village Settlement Association for the very valuable services rendered to them m thrir endeavors to secure a puce of l*nd whereon to make a homo for themselves and families beyond the reach of want of the necessaiies of life. The whole working population of New Zealand is under an obligation to you for your efforts ia assisting to frame and bring into operation regulations which will enab'e every man who desires it to make a comfortable home, and acquire a piece of land practi cally hia own under conditions which places such a thing within the reach of the poorest. Your services have been none the less valuable becanse performed quietly and unostentatiously, few being aware of the work you wtre doing "
