HOW TO DEAL WITH THE CODLIN MOTH.

A Gallfornian paper to hand by the mail gives a brief account of some important experiments made with the objoot of combating the ravages of the codlia moth. For two years the State Entomologist at Illinois (Professor Forbes) has been conducting experiments in apple orohards with arsenical pokena, and shows that an average of at leash 70 per cent of apples now destroyed or injured by tbe codlln moth and all other insects may be saved to ripening by one or two sprayings with Paris green mae'e in early spring while tho fruit is not larger than a hszal nub. Observations and analysis have shown that there is not the slightest danger to the oonsuraer of the fruit from poisoning the trees thus early in the eeason, when the apples are very small. Experiments show, however, that late poisoning is dangerous, and farthermore, is without effect on the codlin moth. Paris green was found most effective. Experiments were made nnder widely varying conditions during two successive years and on two varieties of fruit. It is estimated the general use of tho spraying method will effeot a saving to the State of Illinois, in the increased value of the apple orop, of £300,000 a year.
