SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD
The sinnl monthly meeting of thb Sonth Baknia Poad Board was held yeeterday. Present— Meßsra Allan, Mulligan, Taolrer and Holmes. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Holmeß waß votsd to the chair.
Mr Allan apologised for the absence of Mr Coster.

The Clerk reported that all the contracts were progressing favorably with the exception of one, Iha contractor for which had not resumed work sinca the holidays. Benison had completed his contract on Mainwaring's road m a very satisfactory manner. Cronin had been Informed that he mutt finish his culvert contract without delay. With regard to grass seed, none of the farmers Beamed inclined to atrip on the conditlaos made by the Board, viz, Is per bushel, and therefore horst a had been put on by the Clerk As there was bo much cocksfoot on the three-rhain plantation it would be advleable to have the same oat.
DAMAGES.
Meesrs Harper and Co, solicitors, Cbristchurcn, wrote on behalf of Mr W. AnderFon, claiming damag.a for the alleged illegal taking by the Board of two acres of land for the purpose of a gravel pit. They stated that an offer (without prejudice) from the Boar^ would be considered.

CONTRACT.
Complaints were made about the manner m vhioh the contractor had tmde the open crossing", and the length' of time he was taking m carting m the timber ; some of this bed been stolon.
Mr Cronin wrote on the Buhjecr, asking for an extension of six wecke, ,aa he had lome oats to cnt.
It appeared that the contract should have baen coraple'el on September 2ad, and the contractor had had a two moatha' exie sion. It was resolved "That notice be gmn Cronin that all the timber must be carted m and the crossings finished within seven days, or the work will be done by the Board at the contractor's expense." COCKSFOOT. Mr Sbellook wrote asking permission to ont cocksfoot m the 3-chain plantation. The Clerk was instructed to reply that other arrangements had been made. DECLINED. Mr Siloock asked for an extension of time for the completion of hid o^ntraot, •s the coarse metal had aauoh interfered with the progress of the work. — It was reaolved, "That »s Mr Siicosk was a month over his time now, no extention could be granted. LEGAL Messrs Holmes and Loughrey wrote re c'aim against Ellesmore Jload Board. — Resolved, "That the solicit ors be m. ■trnoted to write end apply f»r the £72 for land, and m the event of nonpayment proceed at once " The Clerk was Instructed to have all correspondence on the subject ready for the next meeting. BATES. The Government sent 1 ate notices for Bakaia and Ashburton Forks Railway ; those, for outside lands wore paßsud for payment, bat the township ratsa w«re ■truck out as they could not bo legally claimed. OVERDRAFT. The Clerk was instructed to arrange with the Manager of the iiaok te overdraft. SHINGLE Some resident from Mainwarlng'a road reqaeHted through Ml* Allan, that extra ■bingle be placed on the low places the present being a favorable time as the contractors were at work. It was resolved that consideration of the application bo postponed till next meet n^. boibd's advertisements. Mr Mulligan moved *' That tho papers reporting the meetings rec«iv« the Board's advertisements. ■Mr Tooker thought both Chriß'cborch papers *hr. uTd share m the advertisements. Blr Allan thought tho Press would report the meetings fr>--e.
