17 December 1850 Friend, McLean, Greetings. I have great affection for you this year. Listen, I agree with your plan. It's a good plan for me. I don't approve of the policeman, but [I do of] a guardian for the Maori, for fights and disturbances, for crimes and for thefts of the Pakehas' goods. I don't like bad behaviour; I like good behaviour and proper organisation. Friend, I am fond of the Pakeha and the Maori living at Omata. Friend, McLean, listen, should your letter come I would leave Omata, leave the Pakeha behind and go beyond the boundary at Okurukuru. My fortified village stands on the boundary and would be a home for me, and this would fulfill your suggestion that I be the one to lead the Maori and Pakeha people.
