[Note at top] 'Forwarded by Te Pakuru's natives from Mania. Copy.' Te Mania 14 May 1845 Go off, my letter, to my dear friend, Te Heuheu. Friend, Te Heuheu, Greetings to you and your friends, your relations, and all your families, living at Taupo and at Tongariro, on the land of your elders and ancestors. I have not yet heard news of you, since our stay together at Whanganui, but you went to Te Rauparaha, to your relative, and later returned safely [Note at end of page] To Te Heuheu, Tongariro, Taupo to your home and children. I have a great desire to come and see you. And if I come, I will also bring your son whom I persuaded at Wanganui to come as my child and be taught our good customs, so that this son of yours could be like Tamati Waka. One of the children of your elder relative, Te Pakaru, I brought to Ngamotu, Taioiwi. Sir, Te Heuheu, my letter sent only to you, were you able to respond? I visited the interior but found no support for my suggestions to you. Don't think of the days gone by when fighting to kill was the practice. Rather think like the great chiefs of this land who have become like the Pakeha, and perhaps in time you may become like your boy, like Tamati Waka. That's all. From your good friend, from McLean [The following page is perhaps also part of this draft.] [Note at top] 'Last clause.' However, I've another message for you and it's this. Don't think about the arrangements of times past, leave them behind in the days long past, that is, with the customs of the past; those deeds no longer have authority. Fighting is also for the commoners, so think along with some of the great chiefs of this land, who are comfortable with and close to the Pakeha, Pakeha whom they regard highly. From your good friend, McLean
[Note at top] 'Forwarded by Te Pakuru's natives from Mania. Copy.' E hoa, e Te Heuheu, Tena koutou ko ou hoa, ko ou whanaunga, ko o whanau katoa, noho mai i Taupo, i Tongariro, i te kainga o ou matua, o ou tupuna. Kahore ano au i rongo korero ki a koe, no to taua nohoanga tahitanga i Whanganui, engari koe kua tae ki a Te Rauparaha ki tou huanga. Muringa iho ka hoki pai koe ki [Note at end of page] Ki a Te Heuheu, Tongariro, Taupo ki tou kainga, ki au tamariki. E nui ana toku hiahia ki te haere atu kia kite i a koe. Me ka haere atu, ka riro mai ano to tamaiti i tohia e au, i Wanganui, kia haere mai ai hei tamaiti moku, kia akona ki a matau ritenga pai, kia rite hoki ki tenei tamaiti au ki a Tamati Waka. Heoi. Na to hoa aroha, na Makarini [The letter is a draft with numerous crossings out; this transcription does not include the alternative words and phrases crossed out.] [The following page is perhaps also part of this draft.] [Note at top] 'Last clause.'
