January 1848 To Mclean, Friend greetings to you who is following what is being said by the Raukawa Tribe therefore be brave and show your strength. Be vigilant as your people of Ngati Apa Tribe is upholding you, be strong as Wanganui is also upholding you. Listen to my chant. "There is nothing in my defeat, as alone I fell, like unto the slaughter at Kaiapoi and the cultivations at Tirarini where stumbling, searching, floating straight ahead and not changing course like a cripple. (N.B. The rest of the chant down to the bottom of the first page appears to be just a jargon of words of obscure meaning and bad spelling.) This is my letter to you in reply to your statement in your previous letter. Here then are my letters, one to Ngati Raukawa Tribe for Te Rauparaha to see the contents of my letter. From Kawana Hunia [Notes on Translation: I have referred to this writer in another letter as being somewhat eccentric. Both Letters have been very hard to translate owing to use of words of obscure meaning and misspelling. I have come across other old time writers, who were inclined to use archaic and esoteric expressions but in Kawana's chant it is just jargon, such as Kaketu could meen cockatoo, pikapika or pukapuka for letter or book.] [Trans. M.R. Jones]
