New Plymouth 5th July 1858 My dear Sir, A matter has occurred which brings out Wirimu Kingi's character more plainly than ever. I had from the time of Katatori's death suspected that his pretended friend was the instigator of his death --- It appears that when Ihaia and Nikorima left their pas at the Waitara two men were left behind, who falling into their enemies hands a committee of the people was held when W. Kingi declared they should be killed --- Aperona his principal fighting chief said, "No", high words ensued and during the quarrel, Aperona used these or like words "You know W. Kingi that you have not been fighting to revenge the death of Katatori for you know that you and I were in league to kill him if Ihaia had not done so --- Aperona saved the men --- This news I had from Stockman who obtained it from a son of Aperona's and others who were present at the meeting --- I understand that this disclosure has caused much suspicion to be shewn by the other Natives; as they know not who may be the next victim of his treachery. I have not been able to obtain further information respecting the taking out of the Mail bag and opening of letters directed to Ihaia by W. Kingi. The change in the Post Office arrangements as to the conveyance of the Mail had prevented the Native coming up again --- Stockman shewed me a letter from Ihaia to him in which he complains of the letters brought by post to him having had their seals broken. I hope next week to be able to report on the truthfulness or otherwise of this rumour --- One of Peacock's vessels the "Mary Clark" I believe is on shore at the Waitara --- How she got there with a S. E. wind is a puzzle. There are all sorts of rumours afloat about it, many of them not much to the credit of the owner. The Wilsons were disappointed at not seeing your brother's family return with the "White Swan". Their loss is however your gain; and the anticipated pleasure is we hope only deferred --- I am anxious to see the series of "Native Ordinances" or rather Ordinance for their benefit --- I do indeed pity poor old Nikorima who so earnestly longs to see a settlement of Native quarrels and a commencement of prosperity by a sale of the land --- I hope we shall be able to do something for those who are so anxiously washing to further the views of the Government. Very sincerely your's, Josiah Flight. D. McLean, Esqr.
