New Plymouth. 22nd. July 1870. Sir, At a Meeting of the Directors of the Cape Egmont Flax Company, held this morning, I was requested, as Chairman, to bring under your notice, the conduct of certain lawless natives, believed to be Hau Haus, now living not far from Opounaki; with a view of obtaining some protection for the Mills erected in that place. On Sunday last, the Cape Egmont Mill was broken into; and Carpenters' tools, with other articles, carried off. This is the third or fourth outrage of like character committed by these aoris. Those living at the Opounaki pah, and its immediate neighbourhood, continue to evince a very friendly disposition; and are taking steps for the discovery of the offenders. There has been an outlay of money at Opounaki, amounting to between four and five thousand pounds. The working of the Mills bids fair to promote a good feeling in the minds of the natives; but protection, either by a Native Contingent, or the removal of the disaffected natives, who are few in number, is required to enable the Flax Companies to work successfully. The great importance of providing for the carry- -ing on of such useful industries as here named, amongst the Native race; and thereby cementing a peaceful relationship between them and Europeans, is so manifest that I feel assured it is only necessary to mention the above facts, to induce you to give your most earnest attention to this matter. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, (Signed) Josiah Flight. To:- Thomas Kelly Esq. Member of the House of Representatives. Wellington.
