New Plymouth. 22nd. July 1870. Sir, At a Meeting of the Directors of the Cape Egmont Flax Company, held this morning, I was requested, as Chairman, to bring under your notice, the conduct of certain lawless natives, believed to be Hau Haus, now living not far from Opounaki; with a view of obtaining some protection for the Mills erected in that place. On Sunday last, the Cape Egmont Mill was broken into; and Carpenters' tools, with other articles, carried off. This is the third or fourth outrage of like character committed by these aoris. Those living at the Opounaki pah, and its immediate neighbourhood, continue to evince a very friendly disposition; and are taking steps for the discovery of the offenders.
