Old Joe was trying hard to en- . list. He had done some valiant lying about his age, and had passed '•’'•all obstacles except the medical examination. He knew he was as sound as a bell, as far as general health was concerned, but he did , not think the doctor would pick his deafness so readily. “Eyesight is more important/’ Joe tried to argue as the doctor .shook his head, “and there’s nothing wrong with my eyes. 'But the doctor would not listen to his arguments. He switched on a radio in the room, and asked Joe what the announcer was talking about. ' “You haven’t got it on very loud,’ ’said Joe. “I just can’t hear him. But he’s wearing a navy suit with a fine white stripe.”' * * * Musolini has been baffled in one more ambition. He canont rule the seas with E’s. * * * Germany is reported to be desperately’ short of brass. Surely * Hitler has all that is necessary.
