THE WOMAN.
$ WHILE SITTING in the back of a truck in 11 the big village ", i noticed a Chinese woman who for cone reason unknown to me caught ray attention, among the many nationalities on tho street, she was just a passer by. but she hold my attention, short and stockily built for a Chinese woman, oho wan wonring a pair of black slacks and a bolero jacket of tho some material, around her head wan. a roll of come kind of cloth, thread threading her way through the crowd, she carried a large banket on her head with no loss of dignity. * * * ON reaching a shop window oho paused on tho pavement and slipped tho banket from her* head, she then proceeded to unwind tho biioth which encircled her hair, that done, and there was some lengfttt in it, she proceeded to foil her hair do, looked at tho reflection of herself in tho. shop window, satisfied tho hair do was correct, she proceeded to replace tho-relit every movement was slow,' sure and methodical. * * * SHE then 'began tßr u^S e ft at iFBg& r mß, bo ■*•*. ap*oho’began unrolling it, i, thought ?or ppi a up* tn© slacks,. I,began to, fidget as , , the operation continued, but nothing happodod tho job completed, oho merely shoved her?/-’ am into the scarf.and pulled out a small cloth bag, sujh as school boys carry marbelc in back hen. from it she took a few coins, fingered thorn lovingly, as though they wore the labour of.years, moved as though going to buy something, than changod her mind, rapidly replaced the money, rewound the scarf and, with her basket went on her way. what passed in her mind that second .when she stopped ? would bo interesting to know, wouldn’t it ?
