THE UNWANTED HUTS

I’ve told you the tale of the huts they pulled down Right after they’d just been erected, Well, they carted them north a mere forty miles Only to have their delivery rejected. ' For nobody knew they were coming; In fact, they were rue to move out, And told Sergeant Baker to keep ’em Without any messing about. Now Baker’s a dinkum old soldier, And stuck to his guns well and true, Orders is orders he told, ’em And these flamin’ huts is for you. But somehow he made no impression, They thought he was selling a pup, And refused to let him unload ’em. To say nothing of putting them up. Well Charlie was growing impatient, And getting nowhere he could see, He cursed them in good Army lan- x guage And told ’em to jump in the sea. They smoked and they argued for hours Till the ground it was covered with butts, Charlie was stripped to his singlet, But they still didn’t want any huts. Far into the night they kept argueing But neither would budge either way; So at last they said they’d, retire And reach a decision next day, Now Charlie’s a bit of a goer, The opposition was sleeping quite sound, So he marshalled his men all about him And dumped all the huts on the ground. He left a short note for the Commandant x Saying the huts were his own; Thanked him for taking delivery And said he had started for home. —J.P., Ngaruawahia.
