Petone Maintain Unbeaten Record ' - A' '.< ; V ■ - - HUTT NOW IN SECOND ' PLACE
As a result of the ninth series of games in the Wellington Rugby- Union’s Jubilee Cup competition on Saturday afternoon,' Petone is still leading for the championship with an unbeaten record, having scored 17 points. By beating Marist Brothers’ Old Boys by /14 points to 6 on the Petone ground on Saturday, Petone registered their eighth win of the season. The game was mainly confined to the forwards, though three of the Petone backs got through for tries — Jaegar, S. Jaeger,- and Hudson. Marist‘s points came through two- penalty goals by Stanaway.
Keen interest was taken at Athletic Park in the battle for second place between Poneke-Oriental, who had 13 points, and Hutt, who were one point behind. A notable member of the combined team’s forwards was A. W. Bowman, the well-known Hawke’s Bay and All Black player, who recently, returned from service overseas. Hutt opened brightly, and soon, had six points. Unfortunately there appeared to be some feeling between' the teams, and some fierce rucks were seen. It came as no surprise to see the referee, Mr. B. P. Wilson, order Sinclair, one. of the Poneke-Oriental forwards, off the field for illegal tactics. This drastic action did not have the effect of cooling tempers, and there was too much playing of the man instead <of the ball. A hard-fought game, in which the defence was very sound, saw Hutt run out winners by 9 points to 3. Hutt scored ■ two tries and a penalty goal to a penalty goal by their opponents. . Through smart work by their captain, Donovan, at ;centre-threequarter, Army outplayed Wellington at Anderson Park, 19-3. O’Brien again showed ? up prominently at the back of the scrum for Army, and he also did some effective placekicking .in putting over a . penalty goal and converting two 1 tries. ' . A close and exciting game at . Eastbourne saw Eastbourne just beat University through a neat field, goal by Gray, which put Eastbourne two points ahead. The students led 11-3 in the first spell, but Eastbourne, lasting well, put on 10 points in the second spell, and did not allow their, opponents to add to their score. Dellabarca kept going tirelessly for the seaside fifteen. ; • ; • Athletic had to play their hardest to beat Seatoun by two points at Kilbirnie. The defence by both rearguards was sound, and’most of the points came by way of penalty goals. Thanks to that prolific scorer, D. Beard, the - ex-Aucklander, Wellington College Old Boys ran out winners against A.A. Battery at Prince .of Wales Park by 22 points .to 13. Good play; by J. Brownlie, the Battery ■. captain, saw his side leading 13-3 at the interval, but Beard altered the position in ithe second spell, scoring two tries,-converting .two, and kicking a penalty goal. This brings his tally of points this season to 70. ■ Following - are the results: — ~ /. Jubilee Cup. * : ? Petone v. Marist Brothers’ Old Boys’, at Petone.Petone, 14 (tries by H. Jaeger, S.
