The Spinsters’ Club opened its temporary home yesterday at the Majestic Cabaret, a very large crowd being welcomed. The facilities for catering, which were placed at the girls’ disposal' enabled them to cope with the serving of hundreds of teas. An orchestra played for dancing, and several delightful items, including a Maori canoe poi in costume, were given by Victoria League girls. Members of the club expressed their thanks to Mr. Carr, of the cabaret, for his generous help and assistance. i
Generous gifts of vegetables were received at the Y.W.C.A. from the Russel/ Terrace land group, W.W.S.A., who send contributions every Saturday, and the Karori land group. W.W.S.A. The Eclair cake shop also send a gift of foodstuffs. Mrs. F. Roberts and Miss W. Wilkinson were in charge of the kitchen in Miss A. D. Rennie’s absence. They were assisted by Mesdames Guinders, K. G. Thompson, Pritchard, Fuller, Misses V. Reid, D. Collins, and Pirie. A generous supper was provided by Vivian Street Church of Christ members. Cafeteria helpers included the Misses Danby, Page (2), girls of the Railways Department and Marsden School old .girls. Other helpers were Mr. G. S. Clark and members of the Progressive Women’s Club. Mr. 11. 11. Newton showed Shell Oil films yesterday. The Rev. J. Churchill, Rpiigotai, conducted the service. The hostesses were the usual helpers, also Mjss Judith McGhie’s team.
The Rhythm Trio again supplied music for dancing at the Victory Club in the weekend. The masters of ceremony were Staff-Sergeant R. Sloan and Mr. R. Morton. Extras were played by Miss Ngaire Slack. Helpers were Misses May Morton, Jean and Mavis Ray. Jean and Mary Day. and Mrs. Slack. Thanks were extended to Miss M. Grant, Brooklyn, who kindly sent a gift.
Women artists gave an impromptu concert at the Toe H Club yesterday. Those not at the performance sat in the lounge, where warm fires/were burning, and played games or read. Friday’s dance was a great success. Thanks were extended to the musicians, who came forward and played, for dancing, following the club’s appeal. The success of the evening was largely due to their efforts. The club also thanks those people wno responded to the appeal for foodstuffs, the continuity of 'this service being much appreciated. Through the generosity of Miss Kathleen O’Connor, the members of Webby s Club were able to carry out their usual activities over the weekend, lhe club many friends thronged the studio, and on Saturday night the girls colourful evening frocks made a striking contrast with the various uniform's of the servicemen present. Pioneer Club members were the hostesses at the Y : M . C A tea last night, Miss yaisy Isaacs being convener. The president, Miss Amy Kane, attended, and spoke. Mr. Ray Smith was chairman. Items were Songs, Mrs. Maisie Duncan; elocutionary items, Miss Nola Hyde; violin solo, Mr. Eric Foley; vocal numbers in unison, the Misses Joy Allan, Joyce Myers, June Herbert. Monica McDonald, Kola Hyde. Mrs. C. McDonald was the accompanist. Community singing was J ed by Mr. S. Allwright, with Mr. Wood at the piano.
Th ® ance for men of th forces, which the Public Service Women’s Club held on Saturday night, was a great success. Miss Maureen Dawson gave exhibition dances, and an orchestra provided bright music for dancing. Mrs. J. G. Young, president, attended. Girls of the club served a home-made supper, and they had decorated the lounge with lovely spring flowers.
