A.N.A. DANCES HELD IN TOWN HALL
Clubs For Servicemen Increasingly Popular >. 1 A departure from the ordinary routine was made by the A.N.A. Club lasi . week, when, in co-operation with the Wellington Patriotic Committee, its Friday and Saturday dances were held in the Wellington Town Hail. This was necessitated by the increased number of servicemen for whom entertainment is needed. An augmented orchestra played the dance music, the dances being rated as successful as any held during the club’s period of activity. An innovation was the presence of many members of the "W.A.A.F. and W.W.S.A. A plentiful supper was provided by A.N.A. helpers, members of the English Speaking Union, and the Victoria League. The clubrooms, in Willis Street remained open,.as,usual. . - "Welcome gifts were received by the cafeteria last week, including two carcases of lamb from Mr. S, T. Belcher, Havelock' North, boxes of provisions and vegetables from Mr. C. Walker, Pahi'atua, and A.N.A. helpers at Marton, per Mrs. S. Simpson; . a .monthly hamper (Dannevirke Women’s Patriotic Society,' per Mrs.' A. Smith) : vegetables from the Sherenden W.D.F.U., per Mrs. G. Mason; and 'foodstuffs from the ’Elsthorpe Women’s Institute, per Miss N. Dill and. the .W-D.E.U. branch, Pahautanui. Musical Assistance Needed. Games and community singing were entered into .with enthusiasm at the Toe H Club last night, when visiting members of the forces made themselves at. home in its comfortable lounge. A bright fire added to its. attractions, and supper was served by women of the club. The services of any person capable of performing on the piano accordion who would volunteer to do so at the dances held on Friday nights, would be greatly appreciated. Anyone prepared to help in this manner, for approximately an hour and a half a week, is urgently requested to ring 40-378. All helpers who have made generous donations in the form of cakes and other edibles are thanked, the continuity of such services being particularly valuable. Busy Dinner Hours.
There was an unusually heavy influx of men at the, National Club throughout last week. . Large numbers were also present at C the tea served on Friday by Misses Bobby Hope-Gibbons and Margaret Cooper, and at the National 1 Union dance held on Saturday, at which the hostesses were Miss. Shirley Spears and Miss M Cooper. Sixty to seventy diners is the customary average recorded at the mid day meal-hour. The number of guests does not diminish at the weekend, and the women «from the Wellington Suburbs electorate, headed by Mrs. F. F. Gilmour, who helped prepare and serve hot meals yesterday, were kept busy. Cinderellas’ Dances. The Cinderella Club rooms were gay with poppies, red berries, and hydrangeas on Friday, when men of the Services enjoyed dancing to Gordon Maple’s music. The monthly dance on Saturday was similarly enjoyed by the many who attended, exhibitions of the Viennese, Specialty Waltz, and Rhumba, by Mr. Jimmy
I" James and his partner, being an added attraction. Roast beef and vegetables was a menu item that proved popular with guests, who were given meals yesterday. Later, a very large number danced to the music of Miss Alien’s orchestra. Those on duty were Misses L. Ford, E. McFarland, G. Finney, and D. Huggins. , ' Unknown Benefactor. An anonymous donor was responsible for the tea served to servicemen at the Wellington Y.M.C.A. last night. Mr. Ray Smith presided. Hostesses were members of the Y.M.C.A. Girls’ Auxiliary, and vocal, violin and elocutionary numbers were given by Mrs. Woodward, Messrs. Hopkins and Caldwell, Misses R. Reid and M. Bell. Misses N. Gray and N. Pritchard acted as accompanists. Community singing was led by Mr. H. Hindle, who was assisted ,by Mr. Wood, at the piano. Colourful Concert. 7 . More than 130 visitors were present at the British Sailors’ Society’s Wellington, premises last week, when an unusual entertainment was staged by some of the society’s' guests. Tom-toms, traditional dances, and flamboyant costumes were all featured. Tire Saturday social included items by Miss M. McCallum, Private B. Westfield and L/Ac. F. Ridgway. Last, night an orchestra, comprising Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Jackson and ■ their three children, provided music, and a male quartet gave Negro ‘Spirituals. Messrs.' Andrews and Somerton, Misses M. E. N. Inglis-, R. Dick, . find N. ... Brennan also , t contributed num bers,' and L/Ac. Ridgway conducted the service." Misses M. Fenton and K. Tustin ’■ were the hostesses on duty. ’
T.F.H. Birthday Party. The Y.W.C'A.’s T.F.H, Club celebrated its second anniversary at the weekend. A special speech of thanks in appreciation of those who contributed toward T.F.H. activities was made by Miss N. Darby, president, at the birthday ceremony. Included among these helpers were Miss A. D. Rennie, the catering convener, Mrs. R. Mclnnes, cafeteria supervise!’, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Martin. Mr. and Mrs. J. Robson, and the orchestra leader and- his assistants, Messrs Johnson, Dawson and Moses. Mrs. J. S. Martin also spoke, and Mrs. Elliston, who made the birthday cake, cut the first slice. .Friday’s W.A.A.F. ~ programme had been prepared, by the pay accounts section, and dance extras were played by three members of the Air Force Band. Misses Peacock, Cameron and Waters were in charge, and the guest of honour was Miss J. Campbell. National Youth secretary for the. Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand.
