NEW HOSTEL FOR SERVICEMEN
Furnishings Needed At Dixon St. Premises The premises of. C. W. Price and Co., auctioneers, 93 Dixon Street, Wellington, a substantial three-storey building, have been taken over by the Wellington Patriotic Committee for use as an additional combined services hostel which will serve at once as a
place of lodging and a handy centre of rest and recreation for soldiers on leave in Wellington, or for visiting men of all the forces who serve the Empire. It has been estimated that it will cost £2170 to put the premises in order, before anything in the way of furnishing is attempted. This money is assured. What is needed at present are donations for the furnishings of the place from top to bottom. ' Mr. Vincent Ward, secretary of the patriotic committee, announced yester-
day that he had received a cheque for £250 from the provincial council of the Licensed Trade in Wellington toward the furnishing fund. He had also received £43/3/3 from the Royal Wellington Choral Union, being the net result of a special performance of “The Messiah,” recently given in the Town Hall. The ; army would supply blankets free of cost, and the committee was looking forward to some of the furnishing firms of the city helping it to provide such essentials as beds-, tables, chairs, dressers, cupboards, and
the hundred and one things that went to complete furnishing of a hostel of this kind. Generally the lay out proposed is as follows: Top floor, some 200 beds, with bathrooms and conveniences; first floor, games and lounge: ground floor, cafeteria, writing and sitting-rooms. The first hostel, in Sydney Street, is always crowded at weekends and, with the possibility of more troops visiting Wellington on leave, the necessity for the Dixon Street hostel is considered unquestionable.
