WILLIAM J. SHAKESPEARE PATON.
There’s a sergeant works in Records Down Headquarters way; You’ll all know where I mean, ’Tis just next door to Pay. ( , His name is Jimmy Paton, Well known you will agree, And if you ever get the chance His poems you must see. He’s just a little rash, That is, sometimes with his quill He rubs it into Lighton Better known as Fiddler Bill. The Colonel gets it also While mounted on his mare; Jim says he goes to Taupiri, But he could go anywhere. There’s Major Seddon’s goat, And Bonny Little’s cow, And according to our Jimmy This camp’s just anyhow. He writes about the huts; He writes about the blizzard, And when it comes to shock troops This sergeant is a wizard. He writes about his spectacles And claims he cannot see, As he starts in manouevrin With a girl friend on his knee. But just you don’t believe it He’ll kid you up a tree, When this lad takes a lady out He doesn’t need to see. He’s very, fond of courtin’ But of late he’s had to hike; Now he has a new idea He borrows William’s bike. Yes, Jimmy is a poet, His poems you must see; And when you’ve read them over With me you will agree. "
