FOR MEN IN UNIFORM

New Service Club Opened Despite the number of entertainment clubs already in Wellington, the new Victory Club in Willis Street proved popular among all members of the forces at its opening on Saturday night. There was a larger gathering than was expected, and it is hoped that these numbers will continue. The hostesses, Mrs. Anderson, president, Miss L. Sparkes, secretary, and Miss V. Sparkes, assisted by members of the committee, were responsible for the friendly atmosphere which prevailed. Mr. Morton acted as master of ceremonies and Mrs. Anderson and Miss Hocking were in charge of the supper. Sincere thanks go to all well-wishers of the club who kindly gave prizes and donations and to all those who spent much valuable time in making the first night such a success. Birthday Cake Cut. The February birthday cake was cut at the Y.M.C.A. soldiers’ tea last evening. The hostesses were women of the Kbandallah Presbyterian Church, with the president, Mrs. M. Hudson. The chairman was Captain M. S. Galloway. With him was Mrs. Galloway, and special guests were Mr. and Mrs. L. Macartney and Lieutenant Galloway. •Songs were given by Misses Olga Burton , and Molly Atkinson and Sergeant R. Sloan, elocutionary items by Miss Monica Bell, and Misses O. Burton, O. Reid and N. Gray comprised an instrumental trio. The accompanists were Misses N. Gray and L. Finlay and the pianist was Mrs. . C. McDonald. Mr. K. Macauley led community singing. Spinsters’ Club. The Spinsters’ Club had a busy weekend. Besides the usual Friday night dance, the girls gave a dance on Satufday night which was well attended. Novelty dances, a savoury supper and music provided by an orchestra helped to make the gathering enjoyable. The club was well patronized again yesterday . Hand-knitted Socks Given. Hand-knitted socks were presented to two men of the forces at Webby’s Club dance on Saturday in appreciation of all they had done to help members. Yesterday • informal entertainment was provided. - At present the clubrooms are being painted. Members wish to thank donors of magazines and special thunks are given to the women who, each week, provide delicious cakes and savouries for supper. Donations From Country. Bowls of pastel-shaded hydrangeas, tiger lilies, the gift of a Lower Hutt resident and member of the women’s committee,* and scarlet and orange dahlias, provided colourful decoration at the A.N.A. Club during the past week. The enlarged lounge space is proving an advantage and is made full use of by men resting, reading or listening to the wireless. The cafeteria comipittee extends its thanks to the Martop A.N.A. helpers, Mrs. A. Simpson, and the Dannevirke Patriotic Society, Mrs. A. Smith, formixed hampers, to Mrs. Lloyd Hammond Rata for fruit and vegetables: to Mrs. F. H. Groome, Waipukurau W. for monetary donation ; and

to the Hutt Valley and Haitaitai W.W S.A. for sacks of mixed vegetables. The week-end dances were crowded. Supper extras wore played by members of the Army and Air Force; also Miss Olive Tunley. At The Y.W.C.A. Hostesses at the Wellington Y.W. C.A. at the week-end were Mesdames A. Lawson and S. T. Kirby. On Satiir-

day members of the Wellington Croquet Association, under Mrs. R. S. Mclnnes, helped in the kitchen and yesterday assistance was given by girls of the Dental Clinic, under . Miss E. Oldham. Other helpers were Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Martin. Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Peacock. Mrs. J. Robson, Mr. P. Brake and girls from the Y.W.C.A. residence. The Rev. L. N. Watkins officiated at yesterday’s service and a concert was arranged by Mr. S. Phillpott.' Generous- donations of vegetable’s were received from the

Lower Hutt and Russell Terrace land groups of the W.W.S.A. Gift of Lamb. The gift of a carcase of lamb from Mr. Alex Smith was gratefully received at the National Cub. Yesterday women of the Wellington Central electorate, under Mrs. A. E. Meech, were in charge. On Saturday, the hostessed at the tea dance for servicemen were Misses Shirley Spears and Rona Heinemann.
