DIED OF WOUNDS
Former Officer In Charge Of Devonport Base Private advice lias reached Auckland that Commander C. B. Tinley, 0.8. E., formerly officer in charge of the Devonport Naval Base, died of wounds in January. Commander Tinley, who left New Zealand in'October, 1939, was ap - pointed about May, 1939, to bo commander in the cruiser Southampton. This ship, with the aircraft-carrier Illustrious, was bombed by German aircraft while escorting a convoy
through the, Sicilian Channel early in January last. Fire broke out on hoard and attained such proportions that the vessel had to be abandoned and sunk. The-great majority of "her crew of 700 were saved. As her commission datgd from about the middle of 1939, it is presumed that Commander Tinley was aboard her and was fatally wounded in the action.
