Everyman’s Hut
“Is thy cause of comfort failing? Rise and share it with another, And through all the years of famine It shall serve thee and thy brother. Love divine shall be thy shorehouse, Or thy handful will renew;
Scanty fare for one will often Prove a royal feast for two.
For the heart grows rich in giving; All its wealth is living grain; Seeds—which mildew in the garner Scatered, fill with gold the plain. Is thy burden hard and heavy? , '
Do thy steps drag wearily?
Help to lift thy brother’s burden — God will bear both it and thee.”
As the Christmas season approaches the thoughts of most people turn to the question of gifts. The spirit of Christmas, seems to have virtues that belong exclusively to that season—virtues that operated on the heart of Scrooge, transforming overnight a tight fisted, flinty hearted old Curmudgeon into an open handed old gentleman, from whose very being flowed out warm love and goodwill to all his fellows, and beneficial to those in less fortunate circumstances than himself. In spite of the changes and vicissitudes that come with passing years, the spirit' of Christmas remains unchanged. This year will see many broken family circles, with loved ones facing perils on land and sea and in the air, but in spirit they will all be united on that day. May we, who have not been called upon to make this sacrifice, remember all those whom a cruel war has separated, and in the midst of our own happy festivities, pray that they may all be comforted and sustained, till loved ones return. And if there is a kind
action, or cheering word which it is in our power to do or say, let us not withhold it till it is too late, but let us do all in our power now to help along the time, when He, whose birth is now commemorated at the season bearing His name shall reign in righteousness, and the song sung at His birth shall be fulfilled in very truth, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill towards men.”
To all our boys at home and abroad and to all their loved ones, sincere Christmas wishes from those associated with Everyman’s Hut.
