Flight Lieutenant RhodesMoorhouse
Flight Lieutenant W. H. RhodesMoorhouse, D.F.C., who is reported killed in action, was a son of the late William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse, the first airman to be awarded the Victoria Cross in the Great War. Flight Lieutenant W. H. Rhodes-Moorhouse, who was awarded the D.F.C. in July for bringing down 23 enemy machines, had many relatives in New Zealand. Mr. John Rhodes, -of Christchurch, is a cousin.
Born in March, 1914, Flying Officer Rhodes-Moorhouse entered Eton College about 1938, learning to fly while still a schoolboy: He gained his pilot’s certificate at the age of 16 while still at Eton. On leaving college he lived in London for some years, continuing to fly with the well-known aviator, T. Campbell-Black. Later he became a test pilot in a district near London and became a . permanent member of the Royal Air Force just before the outbreak of the war in 1934.
He inherited the entailed estate of his great-grandfather, the late Hon. W. B. Rhodes, of Highland Park, Wellington. His grandfather was the late Mr. Edward Moorhouse, brother of Mr. Sefton Moorhouse. In 1936 he married Miss Amalia Demetriadi, daughter of Sir Stephen Demetriadi, at that time president of the London Chamber of Commerce.
