AMUSEMENTS

STATE THEATRE. The mail train is- thundering through the night and most of the passengers are asleep when suddenly there is a grinding of brakes . . • the communication cord has been pulled. The guard of the train hastens along the corridors to find the cause . . . on the floor, is a beautiful young girl lying unconscious and the door open. The unravelling of the motive behind this mysterious occurrence forms the enthralling plot of “The Spider,” the G-B-D action drama screening at the State Theatre. ./ Derrick de Marney, the well known screen, stage and radio actor, plays the role of Gilbert Silver of the C.I.D. who is given charge of the case, and he is aided in his efforts to solve the mystery and also capture the notorious jewel thief, “The Spider,’ by his young wife, Sally (Diana Churchill). Glamorous ■ Jean Gillie plays the role of Clare Marley, a stage star in this film, which was directed by Maurice Elvey, and the remainder of the cast comprises many noted artists including Cecil Parker, Frank Cellier, Edward Lexy, Ronald Shiner, Allan Jeayes, Moira Lynd, and Anthony Holies. ; \

O. Henry’s handsome and adventursome caballero, the Cisco Kid, is back from the border!

He is played for the second time by tall, debonair Cesar Romero, who scored so terrifically in “The Cisco Kid and the Lady.” This time it’s “Viva Cisco Kid,” the 20th CenturyFox film screening at the State Theatre. Romero is even better in this film—riding, shooting, facing danger and finding romance at every/€urn in the trail with the reckless abandon that characterized the famous Cis€o.

Five seconds after Cisco has declared himself through with all senoritas, lovely Jean Rogers walks into his life. She’s a damsel in distress — and the gallant Cisco rushes to her rescue. From then on he keeps himself and his ever-present pal, Gordito, in trouble trying to keep her out of it. But it’s love and it’s wonderful for the romantic caballero! The roly poly Chris-Pin Martin again plays Gordito, whose fruitless attempts to check Cisco’s romantic inclinations provide plenty of laughs. Martin, in his lumbering way, also aids Romero in blocking, a robbery, eluding a posse and breaking up the worst gang of desperadoes in the old West. But Cisco is more than a match for any gang of desperadoes, and he proves this in a way that will keep you thrilled and entertained. “Viva Cisco Kid” must be seen! Minor Watson and Stanley. Fields also shine in the fine cast.
