Colonel R. A. Row, D.5..0., who has been appointed Officer. Commanding the Central District in succession to Brigadier E. Puttick, was born in Christchurch and educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and .Canterbury University College. At the outbreak of the Great War he held a commission in the Territorial Forces and interrupted his university studies to, volunteer, for service overseas. He went away with the Canterbury Regiment in ; the rank of captain and served throughout the Gallipoli cam-

paign and later in France. During the war he commanded the Ist and 3rd Battalions of the Canterbury Regiment, and for a period of six weeks in 1917 commanded the 2nd New Zealand Infantry Brigade. He was decorated with the D.S.O. and was three times mentioned in dispatches.

Upon returning to New Zealand, Colonel Row joined the New Zealand Staff Corps and served as Staff Officer in charge of Regimental District 10 (Canterbury), Brigade Major of the 3rd New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, Assistant Adjutant and Quar-termaster-General for the Southern Command, Quartermaster-General at General Headquarters, and later, up to his latest appointment, as General Staff Officer, Central Military District.
