The Hon. F. JONES
Minister of Defence Visits Army Headquarters ; A visit was made to Army Head- . quarters just prior to Christmas by i the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), who had afternoon tea with i the members of the civilian staff of I the Army Department. The UnderI Secretary of Defence, Mr. H. Turner, . welcomed the Minister, and spoke in ; eulogistic terms of the way in which ; the staff had performed their duties during the past year. His remarks were endorsed by the Chief of Staff, Major-General J. E. Duigan, who mentioned the tremendous help the civilian staff had been to the service side of the Department. The Minister said that it was the first opportunity he had had of meeting members of the civilian staff. He recognised the enormous amount of extra work thrown on their shoulders by the outbreak of war and the voluminous correspondence that had to )be handled. It was gratifying to know ? that the duties had been performed I loyally and ungrudgingly, particularly when this entailed long hours. In wishing all the compliments of the season, the Minister said he felt sure , that the staff would continue to give , of its best in the year to come. a
