Wellington’s Rousing Welcome to New Zealand’s Leader of the Second Expeditionary Force

A vast and enthusiastic gathering, rising to their feet in a burst of spontaneous cheering, in the Town Hall, Wellington, on Thursday week last, gave a wonderful welcome to Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., D. 5.0., New Zealand’s Great War hero, who has been appointed G.O.C. the second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

Miles (Quartermaster-General), Commodore H. E. Horan, R.N. (Chief of the Naval Staff), Group-Captain H. W. L. Saunders (Chief of the Air Staff), Sir Harry Batterbee (High Commissioner for the U.K. in New Zealand), the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser), the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F Jones), the Attorney-General (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason), the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C. (Dominion President of the Returned Soldiers’ Association), Colonel A. Cowles (president of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association, the Hon. T. Brindle, M.L.C., Mr. T. Jordan (Mayor of Masterton), Mrs. Hislop (Mayoress), and Councillors M. Fraser, W. J. Gaudin, R. A. Wright, W. Appleton, and L. McKenzie.
