ASSOCIATION GIVES DANCE

Troops stationed at Fort Dorset were guests of the Fort Dorset Association on Wednesday evening at a special Christmas dance in the Rongotai College gymnasium. The room was crowded with soldiers and their partners. Officers as well as men enjoyed the special programme which had been arranged and which included, besides modern and old-time dances, two colourful ballets by Mr. David Devitt’s pupils. In addition, an impromptu item was given by Gunners G. C. Bliss, R. S. V. Simpson and J. B. Aimers, Gunner Bliss later singing two excellent solos.

Shortly before supper was served, “Father Christmas” made a dramatic appearance from behind the stage curtains, and in the hush that followed the orchestra struck up Christmas carols, which were sung by the entire company. Paper caps and other novelties were distributed by association members, the soldiers appearing in a motley of headgear, which made flippant contrast to their khaki uniforms.

Major A. C. Hinman, president of the Fort Dorset Association, briefly addressed the gathering, - and Captain Thomas, on behalf of the battery, thanked those who had arranged the dance, which was particularly appreciated by those who had not been granted Christmas leave. The captain called for cheers for the association and musical honours for the young women present.
