The White Ribbon. "For God, and Home, and Humanity." WELLINGTON, OCTOBER 18, 1931. ETERNAL VIGILANCE.

Once more we have been forcibly reminded of the old saying, “Eternal vigilance is the price of safety." Rights won by long struggle may be lost if we are not alert and watchful. Our stalwarts of old won for us the right to a vote on the Licensing issue at every triennial election. The Trade have ever l>een anxious to lengthen this term, and now they have succeeded in getting it lengthened for this one time. It is the thin end of the wedge. We are pleased to see that our District Conventions everywhere realised this. Unions everywhere have wakened to the fact that we must sacrifice to keep what has been won for us at such a cost. They have resolved everywhere to carry on our educational work with renewed vigour. There is to lie no slackening of our efforts because the Poll has been postponed. The Poll is only an incident in our long campaign for a dry Dominion. We are to he ready whenever the vote is taken. By voice and pen, the spoken and the written word, make all the facts of the racial menace of alcohol known.

PESSIMISM. At a District Convention, a s|>eaker, commenting on the pessimism of some leaders, who have tried to convince White Riblmners that there is no immediate hope of winning Prohibition, said: "It is criminal of a leader to e.\. press doubt of victory in a righteou.v cause. Suppose an officer leading out his men to an attack told them they had no hope of winning the battle, but they must go on. What would you do to such an officer?" A voice from the audience replied, “Take him liehind th? lines and shoot him.” "Just what ho would deseive,” replied the speaker.
