Canteibury Women's Institute.
The eleventh annual meeting of the Canterbury Women’s Institute was held on Feb. 19th. The secretary reported that during the recess a letter enclosing copies of the resolutions adopted, and of Mrs Wells’s address regarding the new syllabus for the primary schools had been sent to the branches of the Educational Institute throughout New Zealand, and to the Premier, as Minister of Education. Replies had been received from the central branch in Wellington and from the Southland branch, the former stating that the matter would he dealt with at the annual meeting in January, the latter that a motion much on the same lines as that passed by the Institute had been carried by it, and subsequently submitted to the Minister of Education. The Premier wrote to the Institute, in reply, that the representations made would receive every consideration, and that they had been forwarded on to the Secretary of the Education Department in connection with any revision of the subject. A resolution was passed adverse to the proposal to introduce Chinese labour into the Transvaal under conditions practically amounting
to slavery. The president read the annual report, which was heartily received. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. The following officers were elected : Secretary, Mrs S. Page; assistant-secretaries, Mrs H. A. Atkinson and Miss A. E. Hookham ; treasurer, MrsEnsom; vice presidents, Mesdaines Smith, Williams, Wallis, and Hookham. The appointment of a president was postponed.
