THE NEW ORGAN IN THE CATHEDRAL.

As Churchmen throughout the diocese of Waiapu will be interested m the grand organ how being erected m their Cathedral J propose to describe the organ and its capabilities m the following articles'. In March, 1906, the vestry instructed the organist " to furnish a specification of what he considered was required for an organ for the Cathedral." This specification was submitted to several of the best manufacturers, and tenders were received from a number of • firms including seven English rOnes, and after careful inquiries the organ committee recommended, and the vestry accepted, the tender of VMr J. E. Dodd, of Adelaide and Perth, Australia. The woodwork of the case, however, it was decided to hay«

made locally to the design of Mr J. E. Dodd, ana the work was placed m \he hands of Mr K. Holt. This case, which faces the choir and the south transept, is of kauri-stained dark walnut. The design is m close keeping with the architecture of the Cathedral and includes three handsome towers m the choir and one m the transept resting on beautifully carved trusses surrounded by canopies of gothic tracery. The front pipes, which are actual speaking pipes, are silvered, with gold mouths outlined with fine purple lines. The console, .the technical name for the key-board and the portion containing the stops and controlling power of the organ, consists of three key-boards and pedal-board, viz., " Swell " cc to c 61 notes, "Great 1 " cc to c6l notes, Ghoir cc to c 61 notes and • '" Pedal" ccc to g32 notes. Attached to keyboards are the following stops, couplers and accessories : — Great .Organ :— Double open', diapason, metals 16ft; phonon diapason, metal, Bft ; open diapason, metal, Bft; claribel, wood, Bft ; viola, metal, Bft ; dulciana, metal, Sft ; principal, metal, 4ft ; harmonic flute, metal, 4ft ; fifteenth, metal, 2ft ; mixture three ranks, metal, various ; tromba, metal, Bft. Choir Organ : — Viole d'orchestre, metal, Bft ; dulciana, metal, • Bift ; lieblich gedact, 1 wood and metal, Bft ; lieblich flute, metal, 4ft ; flageo- ' let, wood, ." 2ft ; orchestral o.boe; metal, Bft ; clarinet, metal, Bft*' Pedal Organ :— Major bass, wood, 16ft ; open diapason, metal, .16ft ; bourdon, wood, 16ft ; violoncello, metal, Bft ; trombone, metal, 16ft. Couplers and Accessories.— Swell to great, swell sub-octave,- swell super .octave, swell to pedal, swell to choir, choir .to great ; choir super octave, choir sub-octave, choir to pedal, great- to piedal, three pistons to each great swell arid- choir the latter adjustable 'and pistons controlling the swell to pedal, great to pedal, and swell to great. Two balanced swell pedals and two tremolants. Full great, full swell, and grand organ pedals. The console is inclosed, m a beautifully finished case of New Zealand kauri, Australian cedar, West Australian jarrah, and the.jpedal board is of Tasmanian black wood. (To be Continued).
