MISSIONARY INTELLIGENCE
Church Zenana Missionary Society.
("C.F.N." Special). . The twenty-seventh annual meeting •of the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society was held at the Queen's Hall, London, on May 3rd last, Sir William- Mackworth Young, X.C.5.1., presiding. The chairman, m the course of his address, said that a note of hope had been struck at all the meetings of the C.M.S. during the week, ahd they meant to dwell on the same note, for they were on the winning side m that .great battle of the Cross. Hardly had they recovered from their astonishment at the extraordinary advance of that wonderful country of Japan when they now heard that China was also wide awake with . the' desire for Western learning. .In India and throughout their mission-stations they had manifest .tokens of the Divine blessings. Miss Kingsmill, from the. FuhKien province, said she regarded it a^ great privilege to speak on behalf of the women of Foochow, where a vast amount of splendid work was being done. - She alluded to the opium evil, and she was thankful to be able to state that the Chinese themselves had taken up the question. They had opened a . refuge, where they had received over one
hundred cases during the first year. The' result was . encouraging, many of the opium victims being reformed. More missionaries were sorely needed.
