Dannevirke.
Vicar : Rev. E. Robertshatoe, B.A. Curate: Rev. C. E. Nicholas. Last month the successor to the Rev. G. E. Kear, Mr C. E. Nicholas, took up his residence among us. MiNicholas has given a quarter of a century's work to the Church, as a lay reader, and now is seeking Holy Orders, and will be ordained on Sunday, April 23rd m Napier Cathedral. Mr Nicholas has found m the parish many old friends, and has already created a most favourable impression m the country districts. After the ordination, Mr Nicholas will be able to devote his time to visiting the out-settl-ers. Our old curate, the Rev. G. E. Kear, passed through Palmerston North last week, en route for Auckland, where he embarked for England. Mr Kear has obtained a curacy m Wakefield, Yorkshire. Wherever he goes he will bear with him the prayers and good wishes of his friends m Dannevirke. The Matamau Church is now being built, and will be one of the prettiest little country churches m the diocese. The architect is Mr J. P. Leighton, of Matamau, who has been trained m church architecture by his father, who was a church architect m Newcastle, England. A sale of work to help the Building Fund was held at Matamau on Wednesday, April 26th. For the first time the three-hours' service was said on Good Friday. The Curate preached at the morning service, and the Vicar gave the addresses at the three-hours' service ; good congregations were present, and listened with much attention and devotion. Owing to the irregularity of attendance of the various ministers giving Bible lessons at the Tipapakuku district school, with the exception of the Vicar, the School Committee have requested the Vicar to take sole charge of the Bible classes m the school, and make such arrangements as he shall
deem best, for the admission of the various ministers who may wish to attend and give instruction. The Church was very prettily decorated for Easter day by a number of ladies and gentlemen, who deserve the best thanks of the congregation for their labour of love. It is a great help to the clergy, and also an encouragement when willing workers thus come forward. The services on Easter day were well attended, although many had left for holidays, and the communicants were m excess of any previous year.
