Sacred Heart Girls' College, Christchurch

; ' NET-BALL CONTESTS. - r>. In the 1923 inter-school net-ball matches held in connection with the secondary schools of Christchurch, which are now concluded, the B team of the Sacred Heart Girls’ College again carried off the much-coveted shield, this time without losing a single match in either round. The A team was not so fortunate, nevertheless it played on the whole a very good game. Ella Williams captained the A team very efficiently, managing finally to secure a well-combined team. The girls in the A team attack were; —Edna Coulston and Thelma Dawson. Centre: —Ella Williams, Lily Lattiraore, and Cecilia O’Reilly. Defence: —Lyra Hickey and Gracie Smith. The centre and defence of the A team proved themselves to be as good as their opponents in any of the matches they played, but the team failed to score victories because their goal-throwers, though good at the practice matches, either lost nerve when playing an outside team or were particularly unfortunate in their attempts to get the ' ball through the ring. The B team was fortunate in securing three brilliant players for its centre: Dorothy McGillicuddy, Dorothy Lynskey, and Gracie Moulin. The two former girls have proved their mettle in previous seasons, but Gracie Moulin, although only a first-year girl, certainly won her spurs this season. On the defence Pat Harrison as usual played a first-class game throughout the season, and Avas ably seconded by Gertie Lattimore and Rita Bowley. No small share of the B team’s exceptional success was due to the fact that it was fortunate • enough to possess in Nora Mahoney and Noreen McKendry two really good goal-throwers in the attack. The final match played on the convent grounds between the A and B teams proved to be au “eye-ppener” to the B team girls, who, in view of the fact that they had not been beaten once during the season had anticipated an easy victory. The B attack seemed to be. off color, while the goal-throw r of the A team were in high fettle, never once missing a goal. To the surprise of many, especially to the B team, the A team came off victors, the scores being 18 to 6. Net-ball was adopted by the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Association this year, and the changing at the beginning of the year of some of the rules of the game caused a little confusion at first, but the girls soon adapted themselves to the new regulations, and became enthusiastically in favor of the new game. An enjoyable afternoon tea finished the season’s matches. St, Mary’s Tennis Club, Blenheim The Misses Leakes gave a very pleasant euchre party on Tuesday evening, October 9, at their home, to help raise funds for St. Mary’s Tennis Club (writes a correspondent). Although the weather conditions were none too kind, quite a number of tennis enthusiasts went along to assist the club’s funds. Altogether about ten tables were occupied, and cards were played up till 10 p.m. Mrs. J. Smith and Miss E. Leake tied for the ladies’ prize, Mrs. Smith eventually proving the winner. The consolation prize was won by Miss M. Hanley. Mr. N. Murphy and Mr. O’Malley tied for the gents’ prize, and in the cut-off Mr. O’Malley won. The men’s consolation.prize provided-keen sport, four contestants having to cut for ,it, Mr. J. Smith cutting the highest card, and was declared the winner. " A very delightful supper I was- then handed round, and done justice to ,by all , present . After .1 supper a musical - programme was gone through several of those present - giving items, while Miss D. McHugh occupied the position of pianist. Before the gathering dispersed Mr.. W. J. 0 Neill (president of the Tennis Club) took the opportunity to thank the - Misses Leakes for their splendid evening and much appreciated efforts to. assist the Tennis Club.
