DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) May 20. For the purpose of making a presentation to their late Administrator, Rev. Father W. J. Forde, a committee representing St. Patrick’s parishioners, assembled on Wednesday evening, May 16. Mr. Frank McConnell, in a brief but very appropriate address, presented Father Forde . with a cheque for a handsome amount, as a token of the parishioners’ appreciation of the good? work # so ably performed by him during his two years’ stay in their midst. Right Rev. Mgr. Ormond spoke in eulogistic' terms of the guest of the evening, and expressed his very great pleasure at being able to be present. He made special, mention of the friendship which existed between them, they having studied at Thurles College, Ireland, and later in Rome. Monsignor Ormond 1 also stated that he had followed with great interest Father Forde’s career in this diocese. During the course of the evening several very enjoyable musical items were contributed, Miss Jessie Nicholson acting as accompanist. Father Forde in reply feelingly expressed his regret at having to sever his connection with the people of St. Patrick’s, of whom he would always have happy recollections, for they had so willingly and generously helped him in the various works he had undertaken during his term as Administrator. * A Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Buckley, in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on Friday, May 20, for the repose of the soul of the late Mrs. Coakley, of the Thames. The funeral left after the Mass for Waikaraka Cemetery. To the members of the family, who a few weeks ago mourned their father’s death, sincere sympathy is 'extended—R.l.P. Rev. Father Zanna, of Whangarei, is oh a visit to the city. He is aboout to leave for Europe on an extended holiday. Owing to increase of parochial work Father Langerwerf’s holiday has been postponed. In the city churches very generous responses have resulted from the appeals of Dean Van Dyk, on behalf of the Maori Missions. In the Rugby football competitions the Sacred Heart . College A team added another victory to their credit by defeating a verydieavy team representing Y.M.C.A. The college lads were very keen, finishing with 24 points—6 tries and 3 goals—to their opponents nil. R. Lander (2 tries), T. Lanigan, L. Griffin, S. Nalloy, and E. Reid were the try getters, while T. Vangioni converted three of the tries. In the recently held athletic sports meeting for secondary schools in Auckland, Sacred Heart College won first place, gaining 76* points. Grammar School, with 71 points, was second. The college lads were defeated in only one out of the eight events contested, that one being the backward race, in which one of their contestants fell. They were first in the 75yds sprint, long jump, relay race, high jump, putting the shot, and the relay walking- event.
