The wedding of Miss Bessie Jameson, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jameson, Wellington, to Mr. Charles Hodgins, “Wicklow Hills,” Pahiatua, was solemnised at St. Joseph’s Church, Buckle Street, last Monday afternoon, when Archbishop CP'Shea officiated. The bride was given away by her father. Miss Kitty Hodgins was chief bridesmaid. 4 Miss Birdie Parrell was the second bridesmaid; and Mr. Joseph Jameson was the best man and Mr. Claude Hodgins groomsman. A reception was held at the New Century Hall, when about 100 guests were present. Dean McKenna and a number of Wairarapa residents were among the guests. Another old pioneer, Mrs. Mary O’Connor, ■aged 86, recently passed away at her daughter’s residence, Petone, Wellington. Her husband predeceased her five years ago. They had resided in the Wairarapa since the early ’fifties. The private interment took place at the Catholic Cemetery on Friday afternoon, the burial service being conducted by Rev. Father Quealy, of Petone, and Rev. Father Phelan, of Masterton.—R.l.P. An enjoyable concert was given last evening to the inmates of St. Joseph’s Home for Incurables by the members of St. Joseph’s newly-formed concert party, under the patronage of Rev. Father P. F. Cullen, Refreshments were generously provided by ladies of the parish. The thanks of the Sisters of Compassion and the inmates were expressed by Mr. J. Hyland to the performers for their most enjoyable evening. A concert and social is being arranged to be held in the New Century Hall in aid of funds for entertaining the inmates of various hospitals and institutions, and it is intended, from the money realised, to give a concert shortly at Porirua Mental Hospital. A most successful concert was given at the Concert. Chamber of the Town Hall last evening in aid of the St. Mary of the Angels’ Church rebuilding fund*; • A very successful inaugural meeting to resuscitate the Inter-Catholic Societies’ Debating Union was held last Wednesday evening. The meeting was convened at the instance of the Hibernian Society. Mr. C. P. McKenzie presided. The following office-bearers were appointed: Patron, his Grace Archbishop Redwood president, his Grace Archbishop O’Shea f secretary and -treasurer, Mr. A. B. Boake; executive committee, Messrs. J. D. McPhee, M. Walsh, and C. P, McKenzie. The debates will commence on the first Tuesday in June, the subject being “Should municipalities control the supply of coal and gas to the general public?” All winter games except Rugby were postpone 4 this week on account of unsuitable weather conditions. In the senior division Marists played a drawn game with Wellington. Fine play was spoiled by the prevailing gale, which carried the ball in every direction. The junior team was defeated by Berhampore, but wins were obtained by the third, fourth, and fifth grades. On the eve of his departure to. take up duties at St. Mary’s, Christchurch, Rev. Father Dignan was met by the parishioners of Wadestown and Northlands, who desired to show the esteem in which he is held by the of each place. Several useful gifts were also presented. The departing priest was also entertained at a social evening by the Children of Mary and presented with a memento in token of his good work in connection with the sodality. The parishioners of Thorndon decided that they could not allow Father Dignan to depart without showing in some tangible form their appreciation of his good work among them, and a well-filled wallet is being forwarded on to him, together with expressions of deepest regret at his departure.
