Invercargill
(From our own correspondent.) July 5. On last Wednesday evening a social in aid of St. Catherine’s Convent was held in the Victoria Hall. There was a very good attendance, and the function was well carried out and proved enjoyable. Mr. P. C. Stokes attended to the secretarial duties in his usual capable manner. There was a fine muster of Hibernians at the quarterly Communion on Sunday at the eight o’clock Mass. It is pleasing to note that the fortnightly meetings of this excellent society are very well attended, and several new members have been initiated lately. In the football field tho Marist Brothers’ Old Boys scoured another win last Saturday, when they defeated the Bluff team by 21 to nil. They are a keen lot, and are training well. They hope to improve their combination as the season advances, and claim that they will yet be a team to bo reckoned with. The schoolboys are doing very well this year; both the senior and junior teams are leading in their respective competitions. Tho seniors have, played and won five matches, ami are four points ahead of the next team. The juniors have played six, won four, drawn" two, and are loading by one point. The seniors play a. solid game, the forwards being particularly good. The juniors have a good pack, and behind it a set of backs who throw the ball about in a clever manner. The boys’ supporters are looking forward to seeing both banners hanging on the school walls at tho end of the season.
