It is with feelings of the deepest regret that I have to chronicle the -; death of two much-respected residents James Hawkins, who died on Thursday, the 22nd April after a serious illness lasting over a period of 12. months, "and Mr. Louis Dean “Dick” Olliver, who died at the Auckland Hospital following an operation, Both of the deceased were well known in the parish and their demise came as a blow to -the parishioners. To the bereaved relatives deepest sympathy is extended. —R.I.P. ' There 5 - also 1 passed away in the parish after '» sudden illness Master Jack Powell and Master Chapman, both pupils of the local convent. . Both boys were very popular at the school and their sudden deaths came as great blow ——,■- ■ - ■ ‘

Waitara, a portion.- of the parochial district ’of , New Plymouth, is following in the - footsteps ,of several other Catholic parishes in New Zealand and is holding a monster bazaar in six .weeks’ time. • . .
The renovation of the Holland Hall is being commenced at once, and a series of . entertainments are being held to defray the expense.
Rev. Father Power, who has been visiting the Back Blocks district in and around Mokau, has now - returned to New Plymouth.
Prior to his departure from New Plymouth to take charge of tho parochial district of Ohura, a farewell social was tendered to Father Kelly at the Holland Hall, on Wednesday evening, April 14. Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., presided over the gathering, which crowded the hall. On the platform were Very Rev. Dean McKenna, Fathers Kelly, Power, Cashman, Harnett, and Mr. O’Shea. An enjoyable musical programme was contributed to by-Messrs-% E. and J. Bennett and Blewman, Messrs. Foley and Rail!. The chairman, on behalf of the parishioners of St. Joseph’s - and other personal friends made a. presentation to Father; Kelly, as a token of the esteem and respect in which he is held. In doing so Mr. Jennings said he knew the district that would be the future scene of Father Kelly’s labors. He had a hard task before ..him, but he would find warm hearts in the King Country. In reply Father Kelly expressed the regret he felt at leaving New Plymouth, where lie had been for four years. He thanked one and all -who had contributed to tho recognition of his efforts there. Fathers Power, Moore, Cashman, and Harnett spoke of the. good ' qualties of tho departing priest, and Very Rev. Dean. McKenna referred to the great assistance Father Kelly had been to him. Refreshments were served, and the social was continued for several -hours.
