May 10. : . % A new Catholic school has been erected at Northland by the members of his- family, as : a memorial to the late Sir Charles Johnston. -The school provides 1 accommodation for 80 scholars, and will serve the requirements of; the Kelburn, Northland, and -Karori districts. The Sisters of Mercy will be in , charge. - The school was" formally opened on Sunday morning by the Very Rev. Dean Holley S.M. (Provincial), assisted by-, the Rev. Father 1 ., Smyth, S.M., Adm. The Very Rev. t Dean sung the. Mass, the choir of the Sacred Heart Basilica, Thorhdoh, rendering the music . under • the conductorship of the ; Rev. Father Schaeffer, S.M. A new organ costing ninety guineas was \ provided by the parishioners, the ; donations-itowards the:, purchase of which realised' £560. Father. Smyth • heartily thanked the members of the family of- Sir Charles . Johnston for their handsome and generous gift to Catholic education. ■ " ■' ' r-'- J : :V b The Rev. Father Fay, S.M., ; has been member of the Nelson A. and P. Association. ■ . ;- v ' C A section next to Marist Brothers’ ; School, Hawkestone Street, lias been bought at a cost of £BOO. : It is ' intended .to spend upwards 0f, ; :.£500 on the property to make it suitable for a playground for the. boys. ." The formation of a handball alley is; 'now being proceeded with. The Marist -Brothers’ Old Boys’ Association weekly socials are. being held in the Alexandra Hall every Wed- : nesday evening, and are proving increasingly popular. Mr. M. McElligott, a member of the M. 8.0.8. Association senior iootball team, has been . selected, as a member of the Wellington representative, team, which is to meet a team from H.M.S. Renown while in port. Messrs. F. J. McKenna and A. R. Burke, two prominent members of the M. 8.0.8. Association, are to bo congratulated on their success in the recent law examinations. ■ ■ \ : l . . : : •. ' ; The football season, is now in full swing, the M. 8.0.8. being represented by three Rugby and six Association teams. The local Marist Brothers’ Schools have ■ also entered several teams in . the lower ■ grades 1 ■} : - The Thomas Moore anniversary musical festival committee met last Wednesday evening under the presidency of Mr. J. P. McGowan. The musical sub-committee-re-ported that the programme was well advanced, and everything augured well for a successful concert. The entries for the competitions close on ; the 15th inst., and it .is confidently expected that a large number will be forthcoming.' ‘ ' . .... Mr. P. J. O’Regan was called away to Reefton last week owing to the death of his father. His many friends sympathise with him in his bereavement. Over 1600 children from our Catholic schools took part in the demonstration for the Prince of Wales and made a fine showing. .. . ■ “ ■ • .
