Coalgate

The balance of the debt on the pretty little church at Coaleate, which is in the Darfield parochial district, has just been paid off (writes an esteemed correspondent). As the Catholics who attend the church are now very few, they deserve great credit for their generosity and progressive spirit. Mrs. E. A. Derrett (president of the Altar Society), who collected the money, cannot be too highly commended for her initiative and her untiring energy. The Altar Society hope to have funds in hands shortly for the purpose of painting the church. Mrs. Hartnell, of Hororata, has very generously presented an altar of figured rixxxu. The men of the little congregation put in a good deal of time recently in clearing the church grounds and in planting ornamental shrubs around the church. They have also put down a neat asphalt walk in front of the church.
